An active participant in shaping policies on immigration and social justice, Carolina Valdivia is an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology, Law, and Society at the University of California, Irvine. Her academic pursuits are deeply rooted in understanding the intricate dynamics of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, race and ethnicity, and the sociology of education. With a keen focus on immigration, her research delves into the multifaceted experiences of immigrant youth and their families, particularly examining how legal and social exclusion impacts their lives. Professor Valdivia's current book manuscript is a significant contribution to the field, as it scrutinizes the intensification of immigration enforcement and its far-reaching consequences for undocumented immigrants and their families. Her work sheds light on the often-overlooked narratives of those living in the shadows of stringent immigration policies, offering a critical perspective on the socio-legal challenges they face. In addition to her writing, Professor Valdivia is actively involved in the UndocuResearch project, which she co-directs. This initiative is dedicated to exploring the experiences of immigrant high school students and the school personnel who support them. Through this project, she aims to bridge the gap between academic research and practical applications, providing valuable insights that can inform educational practices and policies. Her scholarly contributions extend beyond academia, as she engages with community organizations and policymakers to advocate for more inclusive and equitable immigration policies. By fostering dialogue between diverse stakeholders, she strives to create a more just society where the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected. Professor Valdivia's work is characterized by a commitment to social justice and a deep empathy for the communities she studies. Her research not only advances academic knowledge but also serves as a catalyst for positive change, inspiring others to challenge the status quo and work towards a more equitable future. Through her teaching, research, and community engagement, she continues to make a lasting impact on the field of law and society.
