Jason R. Spence

Focusing on high-impact outcomes in the realm of biomedical engineering, Jason R. Spence serves as a Professor and H. Marvin Pollard Collegiate Professor in Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. With joint appointments in Cell & Developmental Biology, Internal Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering, Professor Spence is at the forefront of pioneering research in organogenesis and regenerative medicine. His research is centered on understanding the intricate processes involved in the formation of complex organs and tissues. By leveraging human induced pluripotent stem cells, he aims to generate sophisticated 3-dimensional tissues, commonly referred to as organoids, in vitro. This innovative approach holds immense potential for advancing our understanding of human development and disease, as well as for the creation of artificial organs. Professor Spence's work is deeply rooted in the fields of stem cells and tissue engineering, where he seeks to bridge the gap between fundamental biological research and practical medical applications. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous awards and publications, reflecting his commitment to advancing the frontiers of biomedical science. In addition to his research endeavors, Professor Spence is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers. His collaborative approach and interdisciplinary expertise make him a valuable asset to the University of Michigan and the broader scientific community.
