Christiane Gruber
Focused on real-world applications of Islamic art history, Christiane Gruber is an Associate Professor of History of Art at the University of Michigan. Her expertise lies in Islamic book arts, paintings of the Prophet Muhammad, and Islamic ascension texts and images. With a robust academic portfolio, she has published three books and co-edited two volumes, contributing extensively to the field through numerous journal articles. Gruber's research interests are diverse, encompassing not only traditional Islamic art forms but also modern Islamic visual culture and Iranian post-revolutionary art. Her work often explores the intersections of historical and contemporary art practices, offering insights into how these traditions evolve and influence each other over time. Currently, she is engaged in the conceptualization and implementation of the Byzantine and Islamic Gallery (BIG) at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. This project aims to create a dynamic space that highlights the rich artistic and cultural exchanges between the Byzantine and Islamic worlds, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and public engagement. In addition to her academic pursuits, Gruber is actively involved in curatorial projects and public lectures, seeking to bridge the gap between scholarly research and broader audiences. Her work not only enriches the academic community but also contributes to a deeper understanding of Islamic art and its global significance. Gruber's dedication to her field is evident in her teaching, where she encourages students to critically engage with art historical narratives and consider the broader cultural and political contexts of Islamic art. Her innovative approach to art history education inspires the next generation of scholars and art enthusiasts alike.
