Dr. Angelia Leung is passionate about the transformative power of dance and its ability to bridge cultural divides. As an Associate Professor Emerita at UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance, she dedicated her career to teaching and inspiring students in the fields of improvisation, choreography, movement analysis, dance education, and production management. Her commitment to dance education is evident in her innovative teaching methods and her ability to nurture the creative potential of her students. Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Leung was not only an educator but also an independent choreographer and dancer. She co-founded Chopsticks & Sneakers, a pioneering collective of Asian and Asian-American choreographers, which provided a platform for diverse voices in the dance community. Her work with the collective emphasized the importance of cultural representation and collaboration in the arts. In addition to her teaching and creative endeavors, Dr. Leung held significant administrative roles, including serving as the departmental Chair from 2006 to 2015. Her leadership was marked by a commitment to fostering an inclusive and dynamic academic environment. Even after her retirement in 2017, she continued to contribute to the department by serving on various committees and co-authoring a publication focused on addressing the challenges of prolonged sitting in university settings. Dr. Leung's expertise in choreography and performance, as well as her dedication to dance education, have left a lasting impact on the field. Her brief return as Interim Chair in 2021-2022 demonstrated her unwavering commitment to the department and its mission. Now fully retired, she remains a respected figure in the dance community, known for her innovative approach and her advocacy for cultural diversity in the arts. Her career is a testament to the power of dance as a medium for expression and education, and her contributions continue to inspire future generations of dancers and choreographers. Dr. Leung's legacy is one of creativity, leadership, and a deep passion for the arts.
