Professor Maria Hernandez is working to advance the understanding of mental health literacy and its impact on Latino communities through innovative research and community interventions. As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. Dr. Hernandez earned her PhD in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, where she developed a strong foundation in social welfare and health policy. Her research is deeply rooted in the application of digital knowledge to improve health policy and community interventions. Dr. Hernandez is particularly focused on enhancing mental health literacy among Latino subgroups, recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities within these communities. Her work aims to bridge the gap between health systems and the communities they serve, ensuring that interventions are culturally sensitive and effective. Dr. Hernandez is also committed to advancing the field of consumer health informatics. She is actively exploring how informatics and mobile health technology can be leveraged to increase mental health literacy among patients with serious mental illnesses. Her research seeks to empower individuals by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to manage their mental health effectively. In addition to her research, Dr. Hernandez is dedicated to teaching and mentoring the next generation of mental health professionals.
