James C. Anthony

Professor James C. Anthony is dedicated to fostering understanding of epidemiology and biostatistics, serving as a tenured professor in the MSU College of Human Medicine. With a primary appointment in Public Health, he also holds an adjunct professorship in the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. His career is marked by numerous awards and honors, reflecting his significant contributions to the field of epidemiology. Professor Anthony is a distinguished NIH Senior Scientist awardee, a testament to his impactful research and dedication to advancing public health knowledge. His work has been consistently supported by NIH R01 awards since the early 1980s, underscoring his long-standing commitment to research excellence and innovation. In addition to his research, Professor Anthony has played a pivotal role in education and training. He has been the founding director of two NIH-funded drug dependence epidemiology training programs. These programs are designed to cultivate the next generation of epidemiologists, one focusing on U.S. citizens and the other on international scholars, thereby broadening the global impact of his work. Throughout his career, Professor Anthony has been instrumental in bridging the gap between epidemiology and psychiatry, contributing to a deeper understanding of behavioral sciences.
