Ruth Nicole Brown

Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown conducts research on the intersections of African American and African studies, with a particular focus on empowering Black girls and women. As a renowned Professor and the Inaugural Chairperson of the Department of African American and African Studies at Michigan State University, she has made significant scholarly contributions through her numerous books, anthologies, and articles. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to social justice and community engagement. In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Brown is an accomplished artist, blending her creative talents with her scholarly pursuits. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and has earned certificates in World Performance Studies and Gender and Women's Studies, which inform her interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. Dr. Brown is the visionary founder of SOLHOT (Saving Our Lives Hear Our Truths), an initiative dedicated to creating spaces for Black girls to express themselves and be heard. This initiative reflects her dedication to fostering environments where young Black women can thrive and develop their voices. Furthermore, she established Black Girl Genius Week, a program designed to celebrate and unite Black women, emphasizing the importance of community and collective empowerment. Her work extends beyond academia into the realms of activism and art, where she continues to inspire and lead initiatives that promote equity and inclusion. Dr. Brown's contributions have not only enriched the academic community but have also had a profound impact on the lives of many individuals, particularly young Black girls and women.
