Riley Smith

Professor Riley Smith, MD, is conducting influential research on comprehensive primary care with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ care, addiction medicine, maternal and child health, and healthcare for the underserved. As an Assistant Professor in the UNC Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Smith is dedicated to advancing healthcare practices that address the unique needs of diverse patient populations. Raised in Raleigh, NC, Dr. Smith pursued his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, where he developed a keen interest in community health and advocacy. He then attended medical school at The Ohio State University, where he further honed his skills and knowledge in family medicine. His commitment to serving marginalized communities was solidified during his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Colorado. Following his residency, Dr. Smith contributed significantly to the academic and clinical community as a faculty member at the University of Colorado and Denver Health. His work there was instrumental in shaping his approach to patient-centered care, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in healthcare delivery.
