Enrique Terán

Dr. Enrique Terán has a longstanding interest in the intricate interplay between nutrition, infectious diseases, metabolic diseases, pregnancy, and mental health. As a professor at the School of Medicine at USFQ and an adjunct professor in Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his research endeavors. Dr. Terán's research is particularly focused on the unique health challenges faced by populations in the Galapagos Islands. He is deeply invested in understanding the higher prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Galapagos compared to other regions of Ecuador. This interest extends to exploring the socio-economic and environmental factors contributing to these health issues, including the varying accessibility to potable water across the islands. His work aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms that link nutrition and metabolic diseases with mental health outcomes, especially in pregnant populations. By examining these connections, Dr. Terán hopes to develop interventions that can improve health outcomes for vulnerable groups in the Galapagos and beyond. In addition to his research, Dr. Terán is committed to educating the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. He actively engages with students and colleagues, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovative thinking and problem-solving. Through his teaching and mentorship, he strives to inspire others to pursue research that addresses critical health challenges in diverse communities.
