Pranab Chatterjee

Professor Pranab Chatterjee was a dedicated scholar committed to fostering an understanding of social work and sociology through his extensive teaching, writing, and mentorship. As the Grace Longwell Coyle Professor Emeritus at the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, he left an indelible mark on the academic community and the field of social sciences. Born in 1936, Dr. Chatterjee began his academic journey in India, where he completed his undergraduate education. In 1959, he immigrated to the United States, where he pursued further studies in social work and sociology. He earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Tennessee, followed by a second master's degree and a PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago. His academic pursuits laid a strong foundation for his future contributions to the field. Dr. Chatterjee joined the Mandel School in 1967, where he dedicated over four decades to teaching and mentoring students. His passion for education and commitment to student success were evident in his engaging lectures and thoughtful guidance. He was known for his ability to inspire students to think critically and approach social issues with empathy and understanding. Throughout his career, Dr. Chatterjee published extensively, contributing significantly to the body of knowledge in social work and sociology. His works included professional papers and books on human behavior theory and social service advocacy, reflecting his deep understanding of the complexities of human interactions and societal structures. In addition to his academic writings, he also published three books of poetry, showcasing his creative talents and offering a unique perspective on the human experience. Dr. Chatterjee retired as an emeritus faculty member in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and a generation of students who benefited from his wisdom and guidance. His contributions to the field of social sciences continue to influence scholars and practitioners, ensuring that his impact will be felt for years to come. He passed away on December 9, 2021, but his legacy lives on through his work and the countless lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.
