Clarence Miller

Dr. Clarence Miller specializes in the field of chemical and biomolecular engineering, with a particular focus on surfactants, emulsions, microemulsions, and foams. His research is especially significant in the areas of enhanced oil recovery and detergency. A native of Houston and an alumnus of Rice University, Dr. Miller's academic journey led him to become a professor of chemical engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he dedicated twelve years before returning to Rice University in 1981. At Rice, Dr. Miller made substantial contributions to both the academic and administrative spheres. He served as the Baker College Associate for an impressive 25 years, demonstrating his commitment to student development and collegiate life. His leadership skills were further recognized when he took on the role of department chair for six years and chaired the Graduate Council on two separate occasions. From 1994 until his retirement in 2008, Dr. Miller held the prestigious Louis Calder chair, a testament to his expertise and influence in his field. Even after his official retirement, Dr. Miller continued to contribute to the academic community as a part-time professor until 2017.
