Yanfen Hu
Well-versed in the complexities of cancer biology, Dr. Yanfen Hu is a distinguished Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the GW Cancer Center. With a robust academic foundation, she earned her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, following her BS from Fudan University in 1985. Her extensive research portfolio is centered on breast cancer and gynecologic oncology, with a particular focus on the mechanisms of BRCA1 phosphorylation in DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair, genome stability maintenance, and the development of drug resistance in BRCA1-associated cancers. Dr. Hu's work is pivotal in advancing our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of cancer, particularly in how genetic mutations contribute to cancer progression and treatment resistance. Her research has significantly contributed to the field of genome stability, providing insights that are crucial for developing targeted therapies for breast and gynecologic cancers. Her dedication to unraveling the complexities of BRCA1-associated cancer has positioned her as a leading figure in the field. In addition to her research endeavors, Dr. Hu plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of cancer researchers. She serves as the co-director of the Cancer Biology track in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In this capacity, she is instrumental in mentoring students and fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation. Dr. Hu's contributions to the field are not only academic but also practical, as her research findings have the potential to inform clinical practices and improve patient outcomes. Her commitment to bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical application underscores her role as a key player in the fight against cancer. Through her work, Dr. Hu continues to inspire both her colleagues and students, driving forward the mission of the GW Cancer Center to advance cancer research and treatment.
