Robert A. Zirkle investigates challenges and opportunities in the realm of international security, focusing on the intricacies of software verification and validation, nuclear weapons effects, and combat modeling. As a Professorial Lecturer and Part-time Faculty at the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his students and colleagues. Since 1990, Dr. Zirkle has been a dedicated Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), where he has contributed to numerous projects for the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, and the Intelligence Community. His work primarily involves modeling the effects of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons, as well as ensuring the accuracy and reliability of software systems used in defense applications. Dr. Zirkle's academic journey began at the University of Illinois, where he earned a B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in Political Science. His passion for understanding the political and technical aspects of international security led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which he completed in 2008. Throughout his career, Dr. Zirkle has been recognized for his contributions to the field of defense analysis, particularly in the areas of combat modeling and the verification and validation of complex software systems. His research has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of how nuclear weapons and other threats impact global security dynamics. In addition to his research and teaching roles, Dr. Zirkle is actively involved in various professional organizations related to defense and international affairs. He frequently participates in conferences and workshops, sharing his insights and collaborating with other experts to address pressing security challenges. Dr. Zirkle's commitment to education and research continues to inspire the next generation of leaders in international affairs, as he strives to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of global security in an ever-evolving world.
