Professor Emma Velez is dedicated to fostering understanding of complex intersections between race, gender, and sexuality through her role as an Assistant Professor of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. With affiliations in Latina/Latino Studies and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, she brings a multidisciplinary approach to her teaching and research. Her scholarly pursuits are deeply rooted in Latina and Latinx decolonial feminisms, where she delves into the nuances of identity, communication, and political marginalization. Professor Velez's work critically examines how these elements interact and shape the lived experiences of marginalized communities. Her research contributions have been recognized in esteemed academic journals, including The Journal of Speculative Philosophy and Hypatia, where she has also co-edited special issues focusing on decolonial feminisms. In addition to her published work, Professor Velez is actively engaged in a book project titled "Orienting Historias," which promises to further illuminate the narratives and histories of Latina and Latinx communities through a decolonial lens. Her commitment to advancing feminist theory and critical philosophy of race is evident in her ongoing efforts to challenge and expand traditional academic discourses. Through her teaching and research, Professor Velez aims to inspire students and scholars alike to critically engage with and question the structures of power and oppression that shape our world. Her work not only contributes to academic scholarship but also seeks to empower individuals and communities to envision and create more equitable futures.
