

Philip Sakimoto
Dr. Philip Sakimoto is a recognized authority in sustainability education and curriculum development at the College of Science, University of Notre Dame. As a Professor of the Practice and Director of the Minor in Sustainability, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic journey of students interested in sustainability. Dr. Sakimoto is deeply involved in overseeing student progress and developing innovative curricula that integrate sustainability principles across various disciplines. His commitment to fostering a comprehensive understanding of sustainability is evident in the courses he teaches, which are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address pressing environmental challenges. Before joining the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Sakimoto had a distinguished career at NASA, where he served as Program Manager and Acting Director of the Space Science Education and Public Outreach Program. His experience at NASA provided him with a unique perspective on the intersection of science, education, and public engagement, which he now brings to his work in sustainability education. Dr. Sakimoto's academic background is rooted in the physical sciences, having earned a B.A. in Physics from Pomona College. He furthered his studies at UCLA, where he obtained both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Astronomy. This strong foundation in the sciences underpins his approach to sustainability, allowing him to draw connections between scientific principles and sustainable practices. In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Dr. Sakimoto is actively involved in promoting campus-wide sustainability initiatives.
