Dr. Paul Westerhoff is shaping the future of environmental engineering through his pioneering research and leadership roles. As a Professor at Arizona State University in the School of Sustainable Engineering & The Built Environment, Dr. Westerhoff is at the forefront of addressing critical challenges in water treatment and environmental sustainability. He earned his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1995, laying a strong foundation for his extensive career in academia and research. Dr. Westerhoff's research is primarily centered on the treatment and occurrence of emerging contaminants in water. His work delves into the complex reactions and fate of oxo-anions during water treatment processes, providing valuable insights into how these contaminants can be effectively managed. In addition to this, he is deeply invested in understanding the behavior and fate of nanomaterials in aquatic environments, a field that is increasingly important as nanotechnology continues to advance. Another significant aspect of Dr. Westerhoff's research is the removal of taste and odor micropollutants from water. These pollutants, although often present in trace amounts, can significantly affect water quality and consumer perception. His work in this area aims to develop innovative solutions to ensure that water remains safe and palatable for all. Beyond his research endeavors, Dr. Westerhoff plays a vital role in academic leadership at Arizona State University. As the Vice Provost for Academic Research Programming, he is instrumental in shaping the university's research agenda and fostering an environment that encourages innovation and collaboration across disciplines. Dr. Westerhoff also extends his expertise to the DeRISK Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he co-directs Project 2, Activity 3 alongside Dr. Kiril Hristovski. This collaboration underscores his commitment to advancing research that addresses real-world environmental challenges and contributes to the development of sustainable solutions. Through his research, leadership, and collaborative efforts, Dr. Paul Westerhoff continues to make significant contributions to the field of environmental engineering, driving progress towards a more sustainable and resilient future. His work not only enhances our understanding of water treatment processes but also inspires the next generation of engineers and researchers to tackle the pressing environmental issues of our time.
