Becky Bivens

Dr. Becky Bivens is a distinguished scholar in the field of art history, currently serving as the Kirk Visiting Professor of Art History at Agnes Scott College. She completed her PhD at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) in 2022, where she honed her expertise in mid-century American abstract art and criticism. Her research delves into the intricate dynamics of emotion in the art criticism of notable figures such as Wolfgang Paalen, Clement Greenberg, and Lucy Lippard. Her dissertation, which explored these themes, was met with significant acclaim and was supported by prestigious fellowships and grants from the Thoma Foundation and the Getty Research Institute. UIC also recognized her academic contributions with several awards, including the Provost's Award, Circle Dissertation Completion Fellowship, and the Ross Edman Fellowship, underscoring her scholarly impact and dedication. Dr. Bivens' teaching repertoire is as diverse as her research interests. She has taught a wide range of subjects, including art history surveys, art criticism, modern and postwar American art, philosophy of art, history of photography, and gender studies.
