Simon Laflamme

Simon Laflamme is the Waldo W. Wegner Professor in Civil Engineering at Iowa State University, where he also serves as a Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering. Additionally, he holds a Courtesy Appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Laflamme's academic journey began with a B.Com. in Economics and Finance from McGill University in 2003, followed by a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the same institution in 2006. He further advanced his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), earning an M.Eng. in Civil Engineering in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Materials & Structures in 2011. Throughout his career, Dr. Laflamme has been deeply involved in mentoring and guiding the next generation of engineers and researchers. His research group is a vibrant and diverse team, comprising several Ph.D. candidates from prestigious institutions such as Iowa State University, Lanzhou Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and the University of Ibadan. This diversity enriches the research environment and fosters a collaborative spirit that is essential for innovative discoveries. Dr. Laflamme has a proven track record of successful mentorship, having supervised 11 former Ph.D. students and 11 former M.Sc. students. These individuals have gone on to establish themselves in various sectors, including structural engineering, research, and academia, reflecting the high caliber of training and guidance they received under his supervision. His academic and professional contributions have significantly impacted the field of civil engineering, particularly in the areas of materials and structural systems. Dr. Laflamme's interdisciplinary approach, combining civil engineering with electrical and computer engineering, positions him at the forefront of innovative research and development. In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Laflamme is actively engaged in various professional organizations and contributes to the advancement of civil engineering through his research and collaborative projects. His work continues to inspire students and colleagues alike, driving forward the boundaries of engineering knowledge and practice.
