James Watkins
Professor James Watkins is involved in groundbreaking research on experimental petrology and stable isotope geochemistry at the University of Oregon. As an Associate Professor in Earth Sciences, he is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the Earth's processes through innovative research and teaching. Professor Watkins earned his B.S. in 2005 from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and went on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of California-Berkeley in 2010. With a keen interest in the intricate details of Earth's materials and processes, Professor Watkins focuses his research on the behavior of stable isotopes and the experimental simulation of geological phenomena. His work contributes significantly to the field by providing insights into the formation and evolution of the Earth's crust and mantle. In addition to his research, Professor Watkins is passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of geoscientists. He offers a range of courses, including geological hazards, geochemical modeling, volcanoes in your backyard, field camp, and earth materials. His engaging teaching style and commitment to student success make his classes both informative and inspiring. Professor Watkins is also actively involved in various collaborative projects and frequently publishes his findings in leading scientific journals. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous awards and invitations to speak at international conferences. Students and colleagues alike appreciate his approachable nature and dedication to fostering a supportive academic environment. For those interested in discussing his research or seeking guidance, Professor Watkins holds office hours every Thursday from 9-11:00.
