Melissa Greenfield

Building connections between disciplines, Melissa Greenfield explores the intricate interplay between psychological well-being and physical health. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she is dedicated to advancing our understanding of how mental health interventions can improve outcomes for individuals facing chronic pain, obesity, and cancer-related distress. Dr. Greenfield's academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in 2005, followed by a Master's degree in psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2017. Her passion for clinical psychiatry and research led her to pursue a doctorate in psychology, which she completed at the same institution in 2021. Her educational background has equipped her with a robust foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of psychology. Since joining UAB as an Assistant Professor in September 2022, Dr. Greenfield has focused her research on psychotherapy outcomes and the impact of racial disparities in healthcare. Her work aims to uncover the underlying factors contributing to these disparities and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring equitable access to mental health care for all individuals. Dr. Greenfield is particularly interested in the intersection of chronic pain and opioid use disorder, exploring how psychological interventions can aid in managing pain while reducing reliance on opioids. Her research is driven by a commitment to improving patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for those affected by these complex conditions. In addition to her research endeavors, Dr. Greenfield is actively involved in teaching and mentoring students at UAB.
