

Valerie Hanson
Valerie Hanson, PhD, serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and an Associate Professor of Writing and Rhetoric at Thomas Jefferson University. With a robust academic background, she completed her PhD in English at Pennsylvania State University in 2004, following her MA in English from Temple University in 1996. Her academic journey began with a BA in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. Dr. Hanson's research interests are deeply rooted in the intersections of writing, visual studies, and science and technology studies. She has a keen focus on the digital, visual, and verbal rhetorical strategies employed within the realm of nanotechnology. Her scholarly contributions include the acclaimed book "Haptic Visions: Rhetorics of the Digital Image, Information, and Nanotechnology," published by Parlor Press in 2015. This work, along with her numerous articles and book chapters, underscores her expertise in these innovative fields. Currently, Dr. Hanson is engaged in several scholarly projects that reflect her dynamic research interests. She is working on a book manuscript that explores pedagogical approaches to teaching the analysis and production of digital scientific data images and information visualizations. This project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application in the digital age. In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Hanson is also crafting a manuscript of poems that delve into visual practices, showcasing her ability to blend creative expression with scholarly inquiry. Her work not only contributes to academic discourse but also enriches the broader conversation on how digital and visual elements influence communication and understanding in contemporary society.
