Marva Griffin Carter

Dr. Marva Griffin Carter supports capacity-building efforts in the field of musicology through her extensive research and teaching at Georgia State University. As an Associate Professor of Music History, Popular and World Musics, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her students. Dr. Carter is notably the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana, a testament to her pioneering spirit and dedication to her field. Dr. Carter's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, followed by a Master of Music in piano performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. Her educational background laid a strong foundation for her research interests, which include African American musics and the intricate intersections of race, gender, class, and religion. A significant aspect of Dr. Carter's research is her focus on the musical history of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as an organist for a decade.
