Mackenzie Savaiano

Dr. Mackenzie Savaiano is an esteemed Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In her role, she coordinates the graduate program in Visual Impairments, where she is dedicated to advancing the field through both teaching and research. Dr. Savaiano's academic journey is marked by a Ph.D. in Special Education: Visual Disabilities from Vanderbilt University, completed in 2014. Prior to this, she earned a Master of Education in Teacher of Blind and Visually Impaired from CUNY Hunter College in 2009, and a Bachelor of Science in Teaching English for grades 7-12 from New York University in 2006. Her research interests are deeply rooted in braille literacy, a field in which she has made significant contributions. Dr. Savaiano's work is driven by a passion for improving educational outcomes for individuals with visual impairments, and she is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment. Her dedication to teaching excellence has been recognized with the College Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Education and Human Sciences in 2020. Dr. Savaiano's contributions to the field have also been acknowledged by the Council for Exceptional Children, which honored her with the Outstanding Graduate Award in 2014. Her professional affiliations include membership in the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, as well as the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading.
