Dr. Laura E. Smithers supports capacity-building efforts in higher education through her role as an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her scholarly pursuits are deeply rooted in examining the intricate dynamics of assessment regimes within undergraduate education. By intertwining elements of higher education and student affairs with poststructural theory, feminist new materialisms, and queer theory, Dr. Smithers seeks to unravel the potential futures that these educational frameworks both create and constrain. Her current research delves into the realms of affect, ontopower, and the student success movement, with a particular focus on the datafication processes in higher education. Dr. Smithers is committed to understanding how these factors influence educational practices and policies, aiming to foster environments that are inclusive and equitable for all students. Before embarking on her academic journey, Dr. Smithers dedicated a decade to working in student-athlete academic services. In her role as an academic counselor and learning specialist, she provided invaluable support to student-athletes, helping them navigate the complexities of balancing academics and athletics. This experience has profoundly informed her research and teaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of holistic student development. Dr. Smithers earned her Ph.D. in Critical and Sociocultural Studies in Education from the University of Oregon in 2018. Her academic credentials are further bolstered by two bachelor's degrees and a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.), which collectively underscore her commitment to advancing educational theory and practice.
