Andrew Kauffman

Andrew Kauffman, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Chinese in the World Languages and Cultures Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Professor Kauffman is actively engaged in research related to modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, and literary translation. His scholarly pursuits are driven by a deep interest in how cultural narratives are constructed and disseminated through various media. Before joining UNLV in 2022, Dr. Kauffman contributed to the academic communities at Indiana University and Macalester College, where he taught courses on Chinese language and culture. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural contexts and fostering cross-cultural communication, which he integrates into his curriculum to enrich students' learning experiences. Dr. Kauffman completed his Ph.D. in Chinese at Indiana University, where he developed a keen interest in the intersections of literature and film. His dissertation explored the evolving narratives within Chinese cinema and their impact on societal perceptions. This work laid the foundation for his ongoing research projects. Currently, Dr. Kauffman is investigating representations of martyrdom in 20th-century China, a project that seeks to unravel the complex layers of historical and cultural significance embedded in these narratives. His research aims to contribute to a broader understanding of how martyrdom has been portrayed and its implications for contemporary Chinese society. In addition to his research, Dr. Kauffman is passionate about literary translation, viewing it as a vital tool for bridging cultural divides. He is committed to translating works that offer fresh perspectives on Chinese culture and history, making them accessible to a wider audience. Dr. Kauffman is also an active participant in academic conferences and workshops, where he shares his insights and collaborates with fellow scholars. His contributions to the field of Chinese studies continue to inspire students and colleagues alike, fostering a vibrant academic environment at UNLV.
