Robert J. Hocken

Breaking new ground in the realm of precision engineering and nanotechnology, Robert J. Hocken is a Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science department at the William States Lee College of Engineering, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. With a distinguished career that spans several decades, Dr. Hocken has made significant contributions to the fields of engineering metrology and nanotechnology, establishing himself as a leading figure in these domains. Dr. Hocken's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Oregon State University in 1968. He furthered his education at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he earned a Master of Arts in Physics in 1969, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics in 1973. His postdoctoral work was supported by a prestigious BS-NRC Postdoctoral Fellowship from 1973 to 1975, which laid the foundation for his future research endeavors. Throughout his career, Dr. Hocken has focused on the development of advanced methodologies for microscopic machines, sensors, and actuators. His research interests are diverse and include engineering metrology, nanotechnology, electro-optical instrumentation, atomic force microscopy, and optical stethoscopy. He has been instrumental in advancing dimensional metrology for Computer Aided Manufacturing, contributing to the precision and efficiency of manufacturing processes. Dr. Hocken's work in electro-optical instrumentation and optical stethoscopy has opened new avenues for non-invasive diagnostic tools, enhancing the capabilities of medical and engineering applications.
