Samuel Merchant

Professor Samuel Merchant is conducting influential research on disparities in criminal sentencing and constitutional theory. As a Visiting Assistant Professor at the OU College of Law, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his students, particularly in the areas of Constitutional Law and advanced Criminal Procedure courses. His academic journey began with a B.A. from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2013, followed by a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2016. Professor Merchant's career is marked by significant contributions to both academia and the legal profession. He served as a Fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States from 2022 to 2023, an experience that enriched his understanding of constitutional law and its practical applications. Prior to this prestigious fellowship, he honed his legal skills as a law clerk for the Honorable Jodi W. Dishman in the Western District of Oklahoma from 2020 to 2022. Before transitioning to academia, Professor Merchant practiced litigation at McAfee & Taft in Oklahoma City, where he developed a robust understanding of the intricacies of the legal system. His time in the corporate sector further diversified his expertise, allowing him to approach legal education with a comprehensive perspective. In his research, Professor Merchant is particularly interested in exploring the systemic issues that lead to disparities in criminal sentencing. His work aims to shed light on these critical issues and contribute to the development of fairer legal practices.
