Bo Zhao is a distinguished Courtesy Faculty member in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University. His academic journey is marked by a profound engagement with geovisual technologies and their social implications. Zhao's research delves into the intriguing world of spoofing phenomena in geography, exploring how these elements intersect with human-natural systems. His work is characterized by a keen interest in Web GIS, Cartography, and Geovisualizations, which he applies to diverse topics such as the gay community in Beijing, location spoofing in social media, and the perceptions of rural-to-urban migrants in China. In addition to his role at Oregon State University, Zhao holds a position at the University of Washington, where he continues to contribute to the academic community. His previous academic appointments include serving as a Non-resident Research Fellow at Harvard University's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation and a Postdoctoral Researcher at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. These roles have enriched his perspective on the intersection of technology, society, and governance. Zhao's academic credentials are impressive, with a Ph.D. in Geography from The Ohio State University, where he honed his expertise in geovisualization and its applications. He also holds a Master of Science in Cartography & GIS from Nanjing University, along with a Bachelor of Science in GIS from the same institution. These qualifications underpin his comprehensive understanding of the spatial sciences and their practical applications. Throughout his career, Zhao has been committed to exploring the nuanced relationships between technology and society. His research has been instrumental in shedding light on how geovisual technologies can influence social perceptions and interactions. By examining phenomena such as location spoofing in social media, Zhao has contributed to a deeper understanding of the digital landscape and its impact on human behavior. Zhao's work is not only academically rigorous but also socially relevant, addressing contemporary issues that resonate with both scholars and the broader public. His insights into the geovisualization of human-natural systems offer valuable perspectives on how technology can be leveraged to address complex societal challenges. As a thought leader in his field, Zhao continues to inspire and influence the next generation of geographers and spatial scientists.
