A champion for advancing diversity in design education, Chanmi Gloria Hwang, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Textiles at Washington State University. With a profound expertise in laser cutting and design, Professor Hwang is dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity among her students. Her commitment to hands-on learning is exemplified in her instruction of the AMDT 411: Advanced Apparel Assembly course, where she guides students in exploring the intersections of technology and fashion. Professor Hwang's research interests lie at the confluence of design and laser cutting, where she continually pushes the boundaries of traditional apparel construction. Her work has been pivotal in projects such as Katie Ellis's sustainable fashion endeavor, where she assisted in the creation of a laser-etched denim fabric featuring a mermaid design. This project, inspired by a visit to Cotton Incorporated's headquarters, utilized Adobe Illustrator and a 24" x 16" 90 Watt Full Spectrum Laser, showcasing Professor Hwang's ability to integrate cutting-edge technology with sustainable design practices.
