Robert M. Metzger
Robert M. Metzger is a distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Alabama. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1962. He furthered his education by earning a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1968. Following his doctoral studies, he expanded his research experience as a postdoctoral research associate at Stanford University from 1969 to 1971. Throughout his career, Dr. Metzger has made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly in the areas of molecular electronics and electrical conductivity in organic crystals. His pioneering work on unimolecular organic rectifiers has been widely recognized and has influenced subsequent research in the field. His prolific output includes over 218 published articles, showcasing his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge. In addition to his research publications, Dr. Metzger has edited four books and authored a graduate-level textbook, further cementing his role as an educator and thought leader in chemistry. His expertise has been sought after globally, leading him to serve as a guest professor or researcher at prestigious institutions in cities such as Heidelberg, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Florence, Kyoto, Padua, Parma, Rennes, Vienna, and Delft. Currently, Dr. Metzger holds the esteemed position of Mercator Professor of Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. His international collaborations and teaching engagements reflect his dedication to fostering a global scientific community.
