Dr. Kananinohea "Kanani" MÄka'imoku is redefining paradigms in Indigenous Teacher Education at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. As an Assistant Professor within the Kahuawaiola Hawaiian and Indigenous Teacher Education Program, Dr. MÄka'imoku is dedicated to advancing the field of Indigenous Education, with a particular focus on preparing future educators to honor and integrate indigenous knowledge systems into their teaching practices. Dr. MÄka'imoku's research interests lie at the intersection of Indigenous Education and Teacher Preparation, where she explores innovative methodologies to enhance the educational experiences of indigenous communities. Her work is instrumental in shaping the curriculum and pedagogical approaches within the Kahuawaiola program, ensuring that they are culturally relevant and responsive to the needs of Hawaiian and other indigenous students. In collaboration with her colleagues, Betty-Joann "Noelani" Iokepa-Guerrero and Patricia "Kanoe" K. Kanaka'ole, Dr. MÄka'imoku contributes to the holistic development of the program, which is housed within the Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikÅlani/College of Hawaiian Language. Together, they strive to create a supportive and enriching environment for aspiring indigenous educators, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride.
