Dr. Dan Luna's research delves into the fascinating world of paleontology, with a particular focus on identifying new fossil mammal species from the Andes in Chile. As an Assistant Clinical Professor at Boise State University's Geoscience Department, he brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for the ancient history of our planet. Dr. Luna earned his Ph.D. in Paleontology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2015, following his undergraduate studies at Duke University, where he obtained a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Religious Studies in 2006. At Boise State, Dr. Luna is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding of geosciences among his students. He teaches a variety of courses, including Physical Geology, which provides foundational knowledge of Earth's physical processes, and Pivotal Transitions in Earth and Life History, which explores significant evolutionary and geological events. Additionally, he leads the Exploring Geosciences Outdoors course, offering students hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning with the natural world. Dr. Luna's research in the Andes not only contributes to the scientific community's understanding of mammalian evolution but also enhances his teaching by bringing real-world examples into the classroom. His interdisciplinary background, combining biology and religious studies, allows him to approach paleontology with a unique perspective, enriching the academic environment at Boise State. Outside of academia, Dr. Luna is an avid outdoor enthusiast, often spending his free time hiking and exploring the diverse landscapes of Idaho. His passion for the natural world is evident in both his research and his teaching, inspiring students to appreciate and investigate the Earth's ancient past.
