Stephanie Galla
Dr. Stephanie Galla is an esteemed Assistant Professor of Avian Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Boise State University. Her work is at the forefront of conservation biology, with a particular focus on avian species facing population declines. She leverages cutting-edge genomic technologies to inform and enhance conservation management strategies, aiming to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical conservation efforts. As the principal investigator of the Conservation Genetics Lab at Boise State University, Dr. Galla leads a dynamic team dedicated to understanding the genetic underpinnings of biodiversity and how these insights can be applied to real-world conservation challenges. Her lab's research is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach, integrating genomics, ecology, and conservation policy to develop innovative solutions for species preservation. Dr. Galla is also a co-founder of the Kindness In Science Collective, an initiative that promotes inclusivity and support within the scientific community, particularly for early career researchers. Through this collective, she advocates for a research culture that values collaboration, diversity, and mutual respect, fostering an environment where all scientists can thrive. Her academic journey began with a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, where she honed her expertise in evolutionary processes and their implications for conservation. Following her doctoral studies, she gained valuable experience as a Postdoctoral Researcher at both Boise State University and the University of Canterbury, furthering her research in conservation genetics. Before her current role, Dr. Galla served as a Habitat Conservation Coordinator for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, where she applied her scientific knowledge to on-the-ground conservation efforts. Her diverse research experience across various institutions has equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in conservation biology today. Dr. Galla is passionate about mentoring the next generation of scientists, encouraging them to pursue innovative research that addresses critical environmental issues. Her commitment to education and outreach is evident in her teaching and her involvement in community science initiatives, where she engages with the public to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation.
