Dr. James Deal conducts research on identity development in emerging adulthood, with a particular focus on the transition to college, first-generation and/or low-income students, and issues related to financial support. As a Professor in the Human Development and Family Science department at North Dakota State University, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his academic endeavors. Dr. Deal earned his doctorate in Child & Family Development, along with a minor in Social Psychology, from the University of Georgia in 1987. Throughout his career, Dr. Deal has been dedicated to exploring the complexities of identity formation during the critical period of emerging adulthood. His work often delves into the role of religion and financial counseling in shaping the experiences of young adults as they navigate the challenges of higher education. His research has been widely recognized and published in esteemed peer-reviewed journals such as Family Process, Journal of Personality, and Merrill Palmer Quarterly. In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Deal is an Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) and holds a Certificate in Financial Planning from the University of Georgia.
