Rick Zechman
Professor inspiring future generations in the field of marine biology, Rick Zechman serves as the Associate Dean of Marine Operations and a Professor of Biology at California State Polytechnic University-Humboldt. With a robust academic background, Rick earned his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, an M.S. from the University of New Hampshire, and a B.S. from the University of North Carolina. His academic journey was further enriched by a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University, where he honed his expertise in marine sciences. Rick's professional career spans over two decades, including a significant tenure of 16 years as a Biology Professor at Fresno State. During this time, he specialized in teaching courses on botany, phylogenetics, evolution, and marine biology, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for the natural world among his students. His commitment to education is further demonstrated by his long-standing involvement with Shoals Marine Lab, where he has been teaching field marine science courses for over 20 years. In 2012, Rick joined Cal Poly Humboldt, drawn by the university's strong emphasis on marine science and field-based instruction. His role as Associate Dean of Marine Operations allows him to contribute significantly to the university's mission of providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students.
