Kate Sweeney

Kate Sweeney serves as an Assistant Extension Professor and Co-Director of the Parent, Infant, Early Childhood team at the Innovations Institute, part of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. Her role is pivotal in shaping the future of mental health services for young children and their families. With a strong foundation in clinical practice, Sweeney is dedicated to advancing program development, overseeing projects, and fostering workforce development. Her work is deeply rooted in policy initiatives that support Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health. Sweeney's career is marked by her commitment to implementing evidence-based practices across various disciplines that cater to families. Her leadership has been instrumental in projects funded by federal grants, where she has served as both principal investigator and project director. These projects have addressed critical issues such as the needs of transition age youth, support for incarcerated caregivers, and care for substance-exposed newborns. In addition to her academic and professional roles, Sweeney is a National Trainer for the Fussy Baby Network, where she contributes her expertise to help families navigate the challenges of early childhood. Her involvement with the ZERO TO THREE Academy Fellows further underscores her dedication to the field of early childhood mental health. Sweeney's academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from George Washington University, followed by a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
