Davy Knittle
Davy Knittle supports capacity-building efforts in the interdisciplinary fields of queer and trans studies, urban studies, and environmental humanities. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Delaware, Knittle brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from their previous role as a HMEI/Princeton Mellon Fellow in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Environment at Princeton University. Their academic journey is marked by a deep commitment to exploring the dynamic intersections of modern and contemporary U.S. literature and culture with urban and ecological themes. Knittle's research is particularly focused on the innovative ways in which queer and trans communities engage with urban environments. Their current book project is an ambitious exploration of urban studies as a framework for understanding queer and trans ecology. This work delves into the practices of queer and trans city-making in New York City, spanning the years from 1950 to 2020. Through this lens, Knittle seeks to illuminate the rich tapestry of interactions between these communities and the urban landscapes they inhabit. In addition to their scholarly pursuits, Knittle is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment for their students. They encourage critical thinking and creative exploration, guiding students to engage deeply with the complex cultural and environmental issues that shape our world today. Their teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that understanding the past and present intersections of literature, culture, and environment can empower students to envision and create more equitable futures. Knittle's work has been recognized for its innovative approach and its contribution to the fields of queer and trans studies and urban studies. They continue to inspire both colleagues and students with their passion for research and teaching, making significant strides in expanding the understanding of how literature and culture intersect with the pressing environmental and social issues of our time.
