Dr. Winston Gwathmey is a distinguished Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, where he also holds the esteemed position of Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Education. His academic journey began with an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Virginia, followed by an advanced fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Further honing his expertise, Dr. Gwathmey pursued additional training in hip arthroscopy in Nashville, TN. With a specialization in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, Dr. Gwathmey focuses on the intricate procedures of the shoulder, hip, and knee. His commitment to athletics is evident in his role as a team physician for both the University of Virginia and James Madison University athletics, where he applies his extensive knowledge to support athletes' health and performance. In his leadership capacities, Dr. Gwathmey serves as the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director and the Medical Student Clerkship Director, where he is instrumental in shaping the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
