Cole Rizki
Cole Rizki's work addresses critical gaps in understanding the complex interplay between transgender studies, democracy, and state violence within the context of Latin American studies. As an Assistant Professor of Latin American Studies and an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Women, Gender & Sexuality at the University of Virginia, Rizki is at the forefront of exploring the intersections of transgender cultural production and activism across the Americas. Rizki's current book project, provisionally titled "Transfeminist Tide: Trans Politics Beyond Liberalism," delves into the intricacies of Argentine travesti and trans politics. This work aims to shed light on the illiberal tendencies of democracy as they pertain to transgender studies, offering a nuanced perspective that challenges conventional liberal frameworks. By examining these dynamics, Rizki contributes to a deeper understanding of how state violence and activism intersect in shaping the lived experiences of transgender individuals in Latin America. In addition to their book project, Rizki has made significant contributions to the field through their editorial work. They have co-edited a special issue of "Transgender Studies Quarterly" focusing on Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Trans Studies, which has been instrumental in broadening the scope of transgender scholarship. As the Translation Section editor for the journal, Rizki plays a crucial role in facilitating cross-cultural dialogues and ensuring that diverse voices are represented in academic discourse. Rizki's scholarship extends beyond editorial work, with their research being published in esteemed journals such as the "Journal of Visual Culture" and "Radical History Review." These publications highlight Rizki's commitment to interdisciplinary approaches, drawing connections between visual culture, history, and gender studies to enrich the understanding of trans politics and activism. Through their teaching and research, Rizki is dedicated to fostering an inclusive academic environment that encourages critical engagement with issues of gender, sexuality, and social justice. Their work not only advances the field of transgender studies but also inspires students and scholars to challenge existing paradigms and advocate for transformative change.
