Ethan Schmidt
Ethan Schmidt was a distinguished historian and educator whose contributions to the field of history continue to resonate. A former history professor at Delta State University, Ethan's life was tragically cut short in 2015. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 2007, where he was celebrated for his dedication to both graduate and faculty development. His efforts were pivotal in the restructuring of the graduate program at KU, a testament to his commitment to academic excellence. Ethan's scholarly work focused on Native American history, an area in which he published two significant books. His research provided valuable insights into the complexities of Native American experiences and history, earning him high regard among his peers and students. His teaching was characterized by a deep understanding of historical contexts and a passion for imparting this knowledge to others. In honor of his legacy, the History Department at the University of Kansas established the Ethan A. Schmidt Memorial Fund. This fund supports graduate students in their research and professional development, reflecting Ethan's vision of history as a tool for understanding humanity. The fund provides grants for essential academic activities, including travel to archives, acquisition of research materials, and participation in conferences. Contributions to the Ethan A. Schmidt Memorial Fund can be made through the KU Endowment, specifically designated for the Ethan A. Schmidt Memorial Award. This initiative ensures that Ethan's passion for history and education continues to inspire future generations of historians. Ethan is fondly remembered by his family, colleagues, and students. He leaves behind a wife and three children, who cherish his memory and the profound impact he had on those around him. His legacy lives on through the students and scholars who benefit from the opportunities made possible by the memorial fund in his name.
