Jean-Jacques Thomas

Jean-Jacques Thomas is a Professor Emeritus and UB Distinguished Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University at Buffalo. With a profound dedication to the study of language and culture, his scholarly pursuits encompass a wide array of interests, including Poetry and Poetics, Formal Plasticity, Linguistics, and Semiotics. His expertise extends to 19th and 20th-century French literature, culture, and film, as well as European Modernism, Quebec and Canadian Studies, and the Francophonie in North America. Dr. Thomas earned his Doctorat/PhD from the prestigious Université de Paris, Sorbonne, France, and an MA in Lettres Classiques et Philologie from Université de Lille, France. His academic journey has been marked by a commitment to exploring the intricacies of language and its cultural implications. Throughout his career, he has published extensively on various topics related to literature and culture, contributing significantly to the academic discourse in these fields. In the classroom, Jean-Jacques Thomas has shared his knowledge and passion for literature and culture through a diverse range of courses. His teaching repertoire includes Modernist French and Francophone literature, Dada and Surrealism, French and Italian Post-World War II Intellectualism, French Film, and French Phonetics, among others.
