Homero Carrion

Homero Carrion Cabrera is a dedicated Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering at the University at Buffalo, where he is making significant strides in the field of earthquake engineering. Hailing from Cuenca, Ecuador, Homero's passion for civil engineering was deeply influenced by his father and the seismic challenges faced by his home country. This early exposure to the importance of structural resilience in earthquake-prone areas has shaped his academic and research pursuits. Currently, Homero is engaged in pioneering research focused on the development of a novel seismic protection system for bridges. His work involves the innovative use of buckling-restrained braces, a project that holds promise for enhancing the safety and durability of infrastructure in seismic zones. Under the mentorship of SUNY Distinguished Professor Michel Bruneau, Homero is honing his expertise and contributing valuable insights to the field. Beyond his academic endeavors, Homero is passionate about martial arts, which he finds to be a source of discipline and focus that complements his engineering pursuits. He is also deeply committed to giving back to his community in Ecuador. With a long-term vision of providing scholarships to underprivileged individuals, Homero hopes to inspire and support the next generation of engineers in his home country. Homero's journey is marked by his receipt of the prestigious Fulbright-SENESCYT Scholarship, which has enabled him to pursue his studies in the United States. He plans to gain valuable experience in the U.S. before returning to Ecuador, where he aims to apply his knowledge and skills to address local engineering challenges. In advising prospective students, Homero emphasizes the importance of thinking big and persisting in the pursuit of one's goals. His story is a testament to the power of determination and the impact of education in transforming lives and communities.
