Mohamed Fakhr

Dr. Mohamed Fakhr is a distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences at the Natural Sciences University of Tulsa, where he has made significant contributions to the field of molecular microbiology. With a Ph.D. in microbiology, cell, and molecular biology from Oklahoma State University, Dr. Fakhr has dedicated his career to unraveling the complexities of foodborne bacterial pathogens. His research is centered on understanding the molecular mechanisms that enable these pathogens to thrive in various food environments, a critical area of study given the global impact of foodborne illnesses. Dr. Fakhr's work is particularly focused on the molecular typing and detection of foodborne pathogens, exploring how these organisms develop resistance to antibiotics and heavy metals. His research delves into the survival strategies employed by pathogens under stressful conditions, including polymicrobial interactions that can complicate food safety. A significant portion of his research is dedicated to studying Campylobacter, a common foodborne pathogen, to understand its survival mechanisms in different environments. In addition to his work on Campylobacter, Dr. Fakhr is investigating the role of large plasmids in the persistence of pathogens on retail meats. This research is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the risks associated with foodborne pathogens in the food supply chain. Furthermore, Dr. Fakhr's interests extend to the diversity of actinomycetes in extreme environments. He is actively involved in characterizing their secondary metabolites, which hold potential for antimicrobial and antitumor applications, utilizing advanced genomic sequencing techniques. Dr. Fakhr's research has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of foodborne pathogens and their interactions with the environment. His work not only contributes to the scientific community but also has practical implications for improving food safety and public health. Through his dedication and innovative research, Dr. Fakhr continues to be a leading figure in the field of molecular microbiology, inspiring future generations of scientists.
