John E. Herman
John E. Herman, Ph.D., serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Virginia Commonwealth University. His academic journey is deeply rooted in the exploration of Late Imperial Chinese history, with a particular emphasis on the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dr. Herman's research interests extend to the study of frontiers and border regions, ethnohistory, economic and environmental history, as well as colonial discourse studies and historical sociology. Dr. Herman is the author of the acclaimed book "Amid the Clouds and Mist: China’s Colonization of Guizhou, 1200-1700," which has contributed significantly to the field of Chinese historical studies. His current research delves into the life and impact of Wu Sangui and the complex period of the Ming-Qing Interregnum.
