Michael Laiosa
Professor with a strong background in environmental health sciences, Dr. Michael Laiosa, PhD, serves as an Associate Professor and Faculty Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health. With a keen focus on the intersection of environmental exposure and public health, Dr. Laiosa's research delves into the effects of in utero exposure to dioxins and related contaminants on hematopoiesis and immune system health in children. Dr. Laiosa's research is particularly centered on hematopoietic stem cells, which are crucial for the formation of blood and immune cells. By examining these cells, he seeks to uncover the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the development of diseases such as leukemia, asthma, and increased infection rates among vulnerable populations. His work is pivotal in understanding how early environmental exposures can predispose individuals to various health challenges later in life. In addition to his research, Dr. Laiosa is deeply committed to education. He integrates his research findings into the Public Health courses he teaches, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of how environmental factors influence health outcomes. His courses often explore critical issues such as pre-term low birth weight and childhood immune diseases, equipping future public health professionals with the knowledge to address these challenges effectively. Dr. Laiosa's contributions to the field have been recognized through various awards and grants, underscoring the significance of his work in advancing public health knowledge. His dedication to both research and teaching exemplifies his commitment to improving health outcomes through a deeper understanding of environmental influences. Beyond his academic and research endeavors, Dr. Laiosa is actively involved in community outreach programs, aiming to raise awareness about the impact of environmental toxins on health. His efforts extend to collaborating with local health organizations to develop strategies for mitigating exposure risks, particularly in underserved communities. Dr. Laiosa's work continues to inspire both his colleagues and students, fostering a new generation of public health professionals who are equipped to tackle the complex challenges posed by environmental health issues. His leadership at the Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health is instrumental in shaping the future of public health education and research.
