History
Concordia University Irvine was founded in 1976 by the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. The university was originally located in Fullerton, California, but moved to its current location in Irvine in 1982.
CUI's first president was Dr. Robert W. Preus, who served from 1976 to 1986. Dr. Preus was succeeded by Dr. James A. Nelson, who served from 1986 to 1998. Dr. Nelson was succeeded by Dr. Richard T. Torkelson, who served from 1998 to 2010. Dr. Torkelson was succeeded by Dr. Brian W. Konkol, who has served as president since 2010.
Under the leadership of Dr. Preus, CUI grew from a small college with an enrollment of just over 100 students to a university with an enrollment of over 1,000 students. Dr. Nelson oversaw the construction of several new buildings on campus, including a new library, a new student center, and a new science building. Dr. Torkelson continued the growth of the university, adding new academic programs and expanding the university's international reach.
