East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public research university in Johnson City, Tennessee. It was founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School, and became a university in 1963. ETSU is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities High research activity." It is the fourth largest university in the state and has off-campus centers in nearby Kingsport, Elizabethton, and Sevierville.
ETSU offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its 10 colleges and schools. The university is home to the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Public Health, and the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. ETSU also offers unique programs in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music; Storytelling; and Appalachian Studies.
ETSU is a member of the Southern Conference and competes in 17 varsity sports. The university's mascot is the Buccaneer, and its colors are blue and gold.
History
East Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School. The school was established to provide teachers for the public schools of East Tennessee. The first classes were held in the fall of 1911 in the Johnson City High School building. In 1914, the school moved to its current campus on the bluffs overlooking the city of Johnson City.
In 1923, the school's name was changed to East Tennessee State Teachers College. The college became a four-year institution in 1930. In 1963, the college was granted university status and its name was changed to East Tennessee State University.
In the 1960s and 1970s, ETSU experienced rapid growth. The university's enrollment increased from 3,000 students in 1960 to more than 10,000 students in 1975. During this time, ETSU also expanded its academic offerings and added new colleges and schools.
In the 1980s and 1990s, ETSU continued to grow and develop. The university's enrollment reached 15,000 students in 1990. ETSU also opened new campuses in Kingsport, Elizabethton, and Sevierville.
In the 2000s, ETSU continued to expand its academic programs and research initiatives. The university also opened a new Center for Appalachian Studies and a new Center for Health Sciences.
Today, East Tennessee State University is a major public research university with a student body of more than 20,000 students.
