Eastern Kentucky University (Eastern or EKU) is a public university in Richmond, Kentucky. Founded in 1879 as a normal school, EKU is now a regional comprehensive institution with over 18,000 students. The university offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate degrees, and is home to the Kentucky Center for Excellence in Higher Education. EKU is also a member of the Kentucky State University System.
History
Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1879 as the Kentucky Normal School at Richmond. The school was established to provide teachers for the public schools of Kentucky. In 1902, the school's name was changed to the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School. In 1922, the school became a four-year college, and in 1937, it was granted university status.
In 1966, the university's name was changed to Eastern Kentucky University. In 1970, EKU opened its first branch campus in Corbin, Kentucky. In 1972, the university opened its second branch campus in Hazard, Kentucky. In 1975, EKU opened its third branch campus in Lancaster, Kentucky. In 1978, EKU opened its fourth branch campus in Manchester, Kentucky.
In 1998, EKU opened its first online degree program. In 2000, EKU opened the Kentucky Center for Excellence in Higher Education. In 2006, EKU opened the EKU Center for Research and Economic Development.

Eastern Kentucky University offers a variety of sports for students to participate in, including:

The EKU Colonels compete in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) for all sports except football, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Big South Conference.

The EKU men's basketball team has won two OVC championships and has made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The EKU women's basketball team has won one OVC championship and has made one appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to varsity sports, EKU also offers a variety of intramural sports for students to participate in. These sports include basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, and volleyball.

EKU's sports teams are supported by a passionate fan base that comes out to cheer on the Colonels at home games. The EKU Athletics Department also hosts a variety of events throughout the year to engage fans and promote the university.
