History
Harding University was founded in 1924 by J.R. Graves, a leader in the Churches of Christ. The university was originally located in Morrilton, Arkansas, but moved to Searcy in 1928. Harding's first president was J.W. Shepherd, who served from 1924 to 1946.
In the early years, Harding University was a small, struggling institution. However, under the leadership of President George Benson (1946-1971), the university grew rapidly. During Benson's tenure, Harding's enrollment increased from 300 to over 2,000 students. Benson also oversaw the construction of many new buildings on campus, including the Benson Center for the Arts, the Mabee Library, and the George S. Benson Memorial Stadium.
In 1971, President David Burks became the third president of Harding University. Burks served as president until 1994, during which time the university continued to grow. Enrollment increased to over 4,000 students, and the university added several new academic programs.
In 1994, President David Burks retired and was succeeded by President David Williams. Williams served as president until 2010, during which time the university continued to grow and expand. Enrollment increased to over 5,000 students, and the university added several new academic programs and facilities.
In 2010, President David Williams retired and was succeeded by President Bruce McLarty. McLarty served as president until 2018, during which time the university continued to grow and expand. Enrollment increased to over 6,000 students, and the university added several new academic programs and facilities.
In 2018, President Bruce McLarty retired and was succeeded by President David Burks. Burks served as president until 2022, during which time the university continued to grow and expand. Enrollment increased to over 7,000 students, and the university added several new academic programs and facilities.
In 2022, President David Burks retired and was succeeded by President Bruce McLarty. McLarty serves as the current president of Harding University.
