Overview Montclair State University (MSU) is a public research university in Montclair, New Jersey. History Montclair State University was founded in 1908 as Montclair Normal School. The school was originally located in downtown Montclair, but it moved to its current location in 1928. In 1958, the school became Montclair State College. The university was granted university status in 1994.
